PrEP uptake, persistence, adherence, and effect of retrospective drug level feedback on PrEP adherence among young women in southern Africa: Results from HPTN 082, a randomized controlled trial
Results of HPTN 082 - a randomized controlled trial offering PrEP to sexually active young women ages 16-25, following for 12 months. The participants were randomized to standard adherence support (counseling, 2-way SMS, adherence clubs) or enhanced adherence support (SOC + adherence feedback from intracellular TFV-DP levels in DBS). The study found high PrEP initiation, and over half of participants persisted through month 6. There was no statistical significance in adherence at 6 months between study arms. Participants were ineligible or discontinued treatment if they became pregnant.
