Understanding Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Adherence in Young Women in Kenya
The Monitoring PrEP among Young Adult women (MPYA) Study involved young women at high risk for HIV acquisition, considering age, relationship status, support from a sexual partner, alcohol use, sexual partner HIV status, etc. Participants were offered daily PrEP and followed for two years. Pharmacy refills declined 50% from initiation (Month 0-1) to participation end (Months 22-24) though electronically monitored adherence had moderately high concordance with TDF levels. High adherence was associated with low baseline score, >1 current sexual partner, <=1 hour travel time to clinic, and a specific study site. This study did not include pregnant women at initiation but participants were allowed to continue PrEP if they became pregnant during the study.
